A man was shot by Tampa Police at an apartment complex Monday after authorities say he started to raise a gun at them.

Tampa Police were called to the Bowery Bayside apartment complex on Monday night for the report of an unknown male subject who was banging on doors while holding something behind his back and yelling incoherently, police say.

The person who made the call reviewed her security video and saw the man was armed with a gun.

She called the Tampa Police Communications Center again to alert them to this, and that information was immediately shared with officers who were responding to the scene.

At 10:19 PM, officers arrived at the complex to speak with the person who called and review her video. One officer recognized the suspect from previous encounters.

Officers then went to the suspect, Jeremy D Liwag's apartment to check on his welfare.

A little over an hour later, as officers were talking to Liwag, he began raising his gun toward the officers, forcing one of the officers to shoot him, police say.

Body cam video captured the incident:

Officers provided first aid and requested Tampa Fire Rescue. Liwag was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening wounds to the abdomen and left bicep.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will conduct the primary investigation into the officer-involved shooting aspect of the event.

Liwag remains in the hospital at this time, with charges currently pending, authorities say.
