As they were canvassing the area, officers heard more shots heard near 42nd Street and Cayuga St.

Officers encountered a man, Wayne Wilson, who was armed with a firearm.

Officials said the officers activated their vehicle's police lights and verbally identified themselves as police officers while ordering Wilson to drop his weapon.

Wilson failed to obey and ran toward the officer's police vehicle while raising the firearm at them. Officers then fired their weapons, striking Wilson.

Wilson was provided first aid until Tampa Fire Rescue arrived and transported him to the hospital. He is currently listed in stable condition.

The officers were not injured.

Wilson was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said this is an ongoing investigation.
