TAMPA — An unidentified man shot by a Tampa police officer is recovering at a local hospital today.

Tampa police officers were called to check on a suicidal man in the 2500 block of West Kenmore Avenue in Tampa early Saturday morning.

The caller told the dispatcher " I apologize to the cop that has to shoot me," according to Tampa police spokesman Steve Hegarty in a release.

An officer arrived on the scene shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday and encountered a man armed with a knife.

The armed suspect charged the officer, who retreated, the police release said. In fear for his life, the officer fired his revolver, striking the armed man.

The man dropped the knife, but continued to move toward the officer. Other arriving officers activated an electronic control device to stop the man.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody and driving to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

No officers were injured.
