TAMPA, Fla. — A well-known South Tampa market and deli was the target of a smash-and-grab burglary over the weekend.
"It's been a part of the community for decades," said Drew Johnson, operator of Swann Ave. Market, located at 1021 W. Swann Avenue.
Johnson says their loyal customer base came through on Saturday, helping them recoup nearly every single dollar stolen.
Johnson says someone threw a brick through the front door sometime after staff members closed on Friday night, leaving glass scattered across the entryway and dining area. He said the crook got away with not only cash, but the entire cash register drawer.
The unknown suspect also stole the DVR hard drive containing surveillance video of the crime, Johnson said.
Johnson is thankful no one was at the shop when the break-in occurred.
"This is the best way this could have happened, when no one was here and no one felt the need to play hero," he said.
On Saturday, Johnson says his business saw an increased turnout for drinks and deli sandwiches, helping them make a quick recovery following the burglary.
"I couldn’t be prouder of the community that we’re apart of," said Johnson.
