TAMPA, Fla. -- A Tampa man was arrested on Friday after an infant was taken to the hospital with multiple skull fractures.

Early Friday morning, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office received a call from Brandon Regional Hospital regarding a three-month old, female child who had multiple skull fractures with swelling on her brain.

She was ultimately transported by helicopter to All Children's Hospital in Saint Petersburg, Florida, where she underwent emergency surgery. The baby is currently in critical condition.

Deputies say 25-year-old Demarcus Johnson was the sole care provider of the child while her mother was working overnight. When the mother returned home from work around 4:00 a.m., she discovered the baby with head trauma and took her to the hospital. Johnson is he mother's live-in boyfriend but is not the child's father, according to HCSO.

Johnson was arrested and charged with Aggravated Child Abuse at approximately 9:45 p.m. Friday night.

The investigation is ongoing.
