HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- A man is in custody after state troopers say he rear-ended an SUV with his pickup truck and killing the SUV driver on I-75 in Hillsborough County.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a call of a deadly crash on I-75 north near Big Bend Road around 7 a.m. According to state troopers, a Ford F-150 rear ended a Jeep SUV, causing the Jeep to overturn.
The crash killed the driver of the Jeep, identified as 37-year-old Shawna Smith. The Ford continued on the road for another three miles before it became disabled completely, state troopers say. The driver of the Ford, 32-year-old Alberto Vigo, tried to run on foot but law enforcement found him shortly after and placed Vigo in custody.
Vigo is being charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and driving while license suspended involving a death.
Smith was not wearing a seatbelt when she was hit by the Ford F-150, according to FHP.
