HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- A man is in custody after a SWAT standoff at a Town 'n' Country apartment complex Monday night.

Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Donna Lusczynski said earlier in the evening, deputies received a tip that a burglary suspect was at an apartment complex on Webb Road in Town 'n' Country. When deputies arrived at the apartment complex, they saw a woman leaving the home.

While deputies were speaking with the woman, an armed man came out of the back of the apartment complex and opened fire at the deputies on scene.

Deputies then shot back, began seeking cover and then called the SWAT team. Despite shots being fired by both sides, no one was hurt, Lusczynski said.

Deputies set up a perimeter around the scene and then evacuated some of the nearby residents. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Nathaniel Cruz, surrendered several hours after the SWAT team was called.

Cruz is being charged with aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer with a firearm. He is expected to face additional charges stemming from his previous warrants, Lusczynski said.
