HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A local high school football coach has been arrested for allegedly inappropriately touching a student.

It happened on Dec. 6 at about 10:30 a.m. at Spoto High School.

Melvin Jenkins, 35, is accused of asking a female student to come to his classroom. While there, he repeatedly questioned her and allegedly touched her inappropriately.

The next day, detectives interviewed him and he admitted to texting the girl and being alone with her in his classroom.

Jenkins turned himself in on Thursday and faces one count of authority figure soliciting or engaging in sexual conduct with a student.

According to the school district, Jenkins was hired in August of 2017, but has not been in the classroom since the allegations first came out. He will now have to meet with the Office of Professional Standards.
