Local farmer's market to receive award to expand affordable, healthy groceries

Posted

Sanwa Farmer's Market is set to expand access to healthy, fresh food in the Tampa area after they received a big award on Friday.

CDC of Tampa, Inc. will award $400,000 to Sanwa Farmer's Market to help increase access to healthy foods and create 12 new jobs in East Tampa.

The hidden gem along Hillsborough Avenue provides a local option to grocery shopping -- where you can find fresh produce at cheaper prices, bulk grocery items, meats and refrigerated and frozen goods.

The partnership has already created six jobs for low-income residents, as well as additional management level positions.

East Tampa is often referred to as a food desert, for the lack of big boxed grocery outlets , but Sanwa Farmer's Market has become a big influence in the community.
