TAMPA, Fla. — BJ’s Alabama BBQ has had a busy month during the pandemic feeding first responders and starring on the popular PBS food show “Somewhere South” with celebrity chef Vivian Howard.

In a show of love during these tough times, the historic restaurant has been feeding police officers, firefighters and even employees at a local Walmart!

“We’re just happy we can provide a service that makes life feel a little more normal,” says LaMaria Smith.

LaMaria is one of the granddaughters who help run the family business that local BBQ legend “Big John” Stephens started more than 50 years ago.

“He’s the reason we’re all here today,” says LaMaria, surrounded by her mother, sister and Big John’s great-grandchildren.

The BBQ staple on Tampa’s Dale Mabry Highway — you can smell it before you see it! — is also getting national attention.

The famous outdoor oakwood smoker that cooks delicious meats all day just starred on popular PBS foodie show “Somewhere South.”

Host and celebrity chef Vivian Howard stopped by to gush about the ribs, pulled pork and secret-recipe collard greens.
