FHP: Blowout triggered fatal crash on I-75 that killed a driver and injured six children

One person was killed and six others injured early Sunday in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 in southern Hillsborough County.

Per a Florida Highway Patrol report a tire blowout triggered the incident that occurred just before 8 am in the southbound lanes, near the Big Bend Rd. exit in Apollo Beach. When Hillsborough Co Fire Rescue arrived on scene, they found a vehicle in the bushes and seven people that were ejected from the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The passengers were all transported to Tampa General Hospital with a variety of injuries. Two pediatric patients were flown from the scene to TGH and four pediatric patients went to TGH via ambulance.

Florida Highway Patrol is now investigating the crash.
