PLANT CITY, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says a man who barricaded himself for hours inside a Plant City home has died.

Investigators said the man forced his way into a home in the 1900 block of Sparkman Road and shot himself hours later.

During a news conference on Monday, a spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff said deputies were called to the area around 7:55 a.m. to investigate a person who was acting erratically.

Before deputies arrived, the unnamed man forced his way into the home. A person inside was able to escape without injuries.

Deputies said the subject fired several shots towards them while barricaded inside the home, but no shots were returned by deputies.

Around 10:30 a.m., smoke could be seen coming from the home and a short time later a single gunshot was heard by deputies.

The man was found inside the residence after hours of numerous failed attempts to communicate with him.

"Our deputies worked tirelessly for hours to try and bring this incident to a peaceful resolution," said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

Several residents living near the home were evacuated as a precaution.

Sparkman Road was also closed between Jap Tucker Road and Celmons Road due to the investigation.

The case remains under investigation.
