TAMPA, Fla. — After being found inside a closed suitcase outside a vacation rental, six puppies, along with their mom and another puppy found separately, are being taken care of by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

On Wednesday, according to the shelter, two Tampa Police Department officers found a dog and her puppy running in a busy neighborhood off Spruce Street near Dale Mabry Highway.

After taking them to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, the officers returned to the area to investigate and heard squeals coming from a closed suitcase sitting outside a vacation rental.

To their surprise, after opening the suitcase the officers found six puppies inside.

“We don’t know the details of what happened and why they were put in there. It’s awful," said Regan Blessinger with the humane society. "We don’t want people to do that. We will take puppies, so if you have puppies that you can’t house or can’t feed, bring them to us. We will gladly take them and find them homes.”

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay said all seven 5-week-old puppies and their mom are being taken care of at their shelter and will be available for adoption when they're ready.

Humane Society staff want people to know if you have a pet you can't take care of to give them a call.

“Just like the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, there are resources if they cannot care for their animals to find places to take them in and to care for them and to then find them better homes," said Blessinger.

Tampa police said it'll be animal services that investigate the case.
