3-Alarm fire at Province Apartments near USF caused by discarded smoking material

Tampa Fire Rescue responded to a 3-alarm fire at The Province Apartmentsin Tampa Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second and third floors on the southeast side of building 18 located on the North campus.

Residents were evacuated, and the fire was under control by 2:20 p.m.

No residents were injured in the fire. One firefighter was injured by falling debris and transported to Tampa General Hospital but is expected to recover.

After investigation, fire investigators determined that the three-alarm fire was caused by a discarded smoking material left on the second-floor balcony of one of the units.

Damage to the building and the contents of multiple units is estimated at $700,000.

The fire is considered accidental.
