HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A 14-year-old boy died from injuries he sustained in a head-on crash with semi over the weekend, FHP said on Monday. The crash also killed two other teenagers.
The crash happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday on a stretch of U.S. 92 west of Turkey Creek Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to troopers, a 2008 Ford Escape traveling westbound on U.S. 92 crossed the center lane for unknown reasons and collided head-on with an eastbound semi-tractor trailer.
The Ford's driver, a 17-year-old boy, and one passenger, a 15-year-old girl, died at the scene. The second passenger, a 14-year-old boy, was flown to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.
According to an FHP report, none of the teenagers were wearing seatbelts.
The 61-year-old driver of the semi-tractor trailer was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in serious condition.
No charges are pending and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, the FHP report says.
