A lightning strike was determined to be the cause of a fire that consumed the garage and kitchen of a Hernando County home Friday afternoon.
Just after 2:00 p.m., Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to a fire at the home.
When they arrived, crews found the garage to be fully involved. The family evacuated, but said the family dog was not accounted for.
By the time firefighters brought the garage and kitchen fire under control, it had sustained heavy fire damage.
The family dog was later found to have sustained burn injuries.
With the assistance of a neighbor, crews transported the dog to a local vet for treatment, where its condition is unknown at this time.
No injuries were reported to the family or first responders.
American Red Cross is in route to provide the family with assistance, since they cannot stay in the house at the moment.
