WEEKI, WACHEE, Fla. -- The Hernando County Legislative Delegation voted to dissolve the city of Weeki Wachee on Monday afternoon.
Local lawmakers cited issues with the city, such as $1 million in debt and city leaders working at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park; calling that a conflict of interest.
Lawmakers in Tallahassee still need to approve the measure so the move to absorb the city into Hernando County is still not a done deal.
The city of Weeki Wachee has been around for decades with the live mermaid showing attracting visitors from all around the world.
Following the meeting, some residents voiced their dismay with the vote, saying they moved to Weeki Wachee, specifically, for its rich history and opposed the delegation vote.
ABC Action News reached out to the park and city, but did not hear back by the time this article was published.
