NEW DETAILS: Citrus armed burglar knocked first

A Citrus County man accused of a burglary where a shotgun was discharged reportedly knocked on the door of the home to see if anyone answered before committing the crime, deputies say.

James Jones Jr., 47, of 1151 NW Highway 19, #134 in Crystal River, is charged with one county of burglary with a dangerous weapon and one count of robbery.

According to deputies, they were called out to 1549 North Crooked Branch Drive in Lecanto Tuesday morning.

The victim reportedly told deputies Jones parked his truck in front of his home and then walked up to the front door where he continuously rang the doorbell and knocked.

When no one answered, Jones walked into the backyard where there was a storage shed, an arrest affidavit states.

The shed contained several motorcycles.

The homeowner says when he saw Jones he armed himself with a shotgun, walked out his back door and discharged his shotgun in an attempt to get Jones to stop and surrender.

Jones then ran at the homeowner and started fighting with him over the shotgun, deputies explained.

During the struggle, Jones took control of the shotgun.

Deputies say the homeowner was injured during the struggle.

Jones reportedly walked with the shotgun to is pickup truck and fled the scene.

Deputies issued a BOLO.

Jones was found at a Crystal River motel and arrested.

He is being questioned in a string of other burglaries in the area that may be connected to a homicide.
