A home health care aide was arrested after deputies say she stole large sums of money from the elderly couple she worked for.

In March, Hernando County Sheriff's Office was assigned the case, when an elderly man and his wife, whom he cares for, reported a large sum of currency missing from the residence.

The man suspected the home health care aide, as he said she was at the residence about the time it went missing.

After the first theft was reported to detectives, a second large sum of money was discovered missing, again about the same time the health care aide visited.

Detectives then devised a plan to place a large sum of documented currency inside the residence.

They then observed the suspect, Shamelia Douglas, stealing the money. Once she left, she was confronted by the detectives and taken into custody. She admitted post Miranda to stealing the money on all three occasions.

She was placed under arrest and charged with two counts of Grand Theft from a person 65+ years of age or older and one count of grand theft.
