BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- The Hernando Leopards Quarterback Club posted a picture of Trevor Bowen on its Facebook page saying, "He was a good kid with a lot of energy and a smile on his face."

The Florida Highway Patrol says a van hit Bowen as the sophomore was walking along California Street in Brooksville.

It was before 7 a.m.

“At the hour of over there it’s so dark believe me," said Noberto Ocasio.

Ocasio has lived on California Street for seven years and says it’s a dangerous road for children to walk on, especially before sunrise.

“You don’t see nothing in the street. It’s dark," said Ocasio.

Investigators say as of now, they believe drugs and alcohol were not involved.

They say the impact happened in the roadway and the van’s driver hasn’t been cited.

There is no paved shoulder or sidewalk along the stretch where it happened.

Bowen’s death originally led to the cancellation of Hernando's game with Crystal River Friday night.

But Crystal River Athletics said at the request of Hernando High School and their players, the Pirates and Leopards will play.

The Hernando Leopard Quarterback Club added “prayers for comfort, strength, and peace for his family."
