Deputy removes driver from burning vehicle after head-on crash in Hernando County

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — A deputy was not injured after removing a driver passed out behind the wheel of a burning vehicle. That driver was later arrest for a DUI.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office said just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to US 41 in reference to a head-on collision near Brooksville.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they saw one of the vehicles involved in the crash on fire.

Upon further investigation, deputies learned that the driver who caused the crash did not exit the burning vehicle.

A deputy immediately headed over to the vehicle, which was now almost fully engulfed, and pulled the driver out. Officials said the driver was passed out behind the wheel.

Paramedics responded to the scene to treat for minor injuries, however, the deputy was not injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene to conduct the crash investigation.

The driver, who was pulled from the burning vehicle and caused the crash, was arrested for driving under the influence.
