Deputies: Violent sex offender on the run

A violent sex offender is on the run after disabling his ankle monitor Tuesday morning and running away from his Weeki Wachee home, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.
 
Dennis Cox, 50, a registered sexual offender, disabled the monitor about 2:17 a.m. and left his home at 9375 Bearwalk Path in the Woodland Waters neighborhood of Weeki Wachee, deputies said.
 
He left on foot, deputies said, but they’re unsure of the direction he traveled.

Deputies consider Cox dangerous and say he may be suicidal.
 
Weeki Wachee High, Winding Waters Elementary and Pine Grove Elementary have been notified of searches in the area of their campuses. Reverse 911 calls have been sent to residents of about 9,500 homes.
