The FAA is investigating after a small plane made an emergency landing in the middle of a south St. Pete golf course Saturday afternoon. Around 1:45 p.m, a 1939 Taylorcraft two seater plane went down on Lakewood golf course.
It was flying from Lakeland, en route to Manatee County, when it lost power. The 18-year-old pilot and his dad were on board at the time. They were hoping to make it to Albert Whitted Airport in St. Pete, but instead, had to land in the 12th fairway of the golf course.
Christian Miller was driving through the neighborhood just minutes after the crash happened.
"When I saw the plane and the amount of damage, you would think that someone got injured. But I'm just really glad no one got hurt," Miller said.
No fuel leaked from the plane. The FAA has already been to the scene to investigate. Golfers are still being allowed to tee off near the wreckage.
Oddly enough, this isn't the first time this has happened. Another small plane landed at Lakewood Golf Course on Christmas Eve 2009. In that incident, the plane was pulling an advertising banner, when it lost power, and the plane's right wing was sheered off after the emergency landing on the course. The pilot of that plane survived.
