A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempting murder after he shot the father of a 16-year-old girl he went to see, officials said.

Johnaton Ramdath, 24, of 37236 Oak St. in Dade City, faces an attempted murder charge. He was booked Saturday in the Land O' Lakes Jail to await a first appearance, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident occurred about 12:30 a.m. Saturday at a home at 4841 Huron St. in Zephyrhills, according a Pasco County Sheriff's Office release.

Ramdath went to the Zephyrhills house in an attempt to see a 16-year-old girl, the release said.

The girl's father, identified as Roger Lee Dean, 51, told the Ramdath to leave.

The 24-year-old man threatened to kill the man, pulled a gun and fired, the release said. Dean was hit once in the thigh area.

Dean was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa as a trauma alert.

During the investigation, Ramdath called Pasco County Central Communications and wanted to talk about the incident, the sheriff's release said. Patrol deputies located the Ramdath and took him into custody.

According to the sheriff's office, Ramdath told detectives he did not mean to shoot Dean. He intended to shoot at the ground.

A weapon was located and  placed into evidence.
