Ohio officer gets to keep K-9 partner

Posted
A retired Ohio police officer fighting to keep his K-9 partner has worked out a deal that will keep them together.

Matthew Hickey of Marietta, a 30-year veteran of law enforcement, bonded with Ajax while working together three years. His four-legged partner became like a member of the family.

But when Hickey decided to retire, Ohio law prevented him from simply buying Ajax. It required him to be sold at auction.

The situation led to a Go Fund Me account that drew more than $60,000 to ensure that Hickey and Ajax could stay together.

In the end, the city and Hickey worked out a solution that didn’t require any money.

Hickey has become an auxiliary officer, which lets him keep his partner.
