TAMPA, Fla. -- One lucky person could celebrate and buy as much Halloween candy they want by winning the eighth largest Mega Millions lottery jackpot in history.

The jackpot for the October 5 drawing is now an estimated $405 million after no tickets matched all six numbers drawn in Tuesday night's drawing. The cash value of the jackpot is $235 million.

October has been a hexed month for Mega Millions. In the lottery's 16-year history, the jackpot has only been won 12 times in the month. The current jackpot is more than double than the previous largest one won in October.

The winning numbers in the October 2 drawing were 2, 22, 29, 31, 34 with 1 as the Mega Ball. The drawing produced 1,001,138 winning tickets at all prize levels.

The $405 million is the largest Mega Millions jackpot since July 24, when 11 co-workers in a California office pool split at $543 jackpot, the third largest in the lottery's history.

Three other jackpots have been won in 2018: $451 million on January 5 in Florida, $533 million on March 30 in New Jersey, and $142 million on May 4 in Ohio.

Each Mega Millions ticket costs two dollars to purchase. The deadline to buy a ticket for the $405 million jackpot is 10:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, October 5.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350. For more information, visit www.megamillions.com.
