With powerful Hurricane Florence likely striking the Carolinas later this week, athletic departments along the East Coast have altered plans for sporting events scheduled for this upcoming weekend.

Most notably, several major college football matchups have either been canceled, relocated or rescheduled.

East Carolina at No. 13 Virginia Tech - Postponed

East Carolina decided on Tuesday not to travel to Blacksburg for their matchup Saturday against Virginia Tech, which drew some ire from Va. Tech faithful. Va. Tech said they were planning on waiting until Wednesday to make a final decision.

East Carolina officials said they're hopeful the game can be rescheduled.

No. 14 West Virginia at N.C. State - Canceled

Saturday's matchup was a highly anticipated one in Raleigh, but with up to 20 inches of rain in the forecast, Saturday's game was canceled. N.C. State officials said they are hoping to add another game to the home schedule. As for West Virginia, the team said it will likely not attempt to add any future games to the schedule, and just go with an 11-game regular season.

No. 16 UCF at North Carolina - Canceled

Concerned with diverting state resources from the emergency response, the University of North Carolina has canceled Saturday's game with UCF. The game has not been rescheduled, but UNC officials said they're hoping to reschedule the matchup.

Ohio at Virginia - Relocated

With the Hampton Roads region still not ruled out for a possible direct strike from Florence, Virginia has opted to relocate its home game to Nashville and play on Vanderbilt's campus.

Boston College at Wake Forest - Moved up

Thursday's game, which was scheduled to be played at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, will start two hours earlier on Thursday, hoping to beat the worst effects of the landfalling hurricane.

Campbell at Coastal Carolina - Relocated

With Coastal Carolina's campus closed, the university has opted to move up and play Saturday's originally scheduled contest on the road. The game instead will be played early Wednesday afternoon.

The landfalling hurricane has also prompted dozens of college volleyball and soccer games to cancel.

The only NFL team in the region, Carolina Panthers, are scheduled to play on the road on Sunday at Atlanta.
