TAMPA, Fla. — Breweries around Florida are joining a worldwide beer campaign called, "Black Is Beautiful," to bring awareness to racial injustice.

"Our mission is to bridge the gap that's been around for ages and provide a platform to show that the brewing community is an inclusive place for everyone of any color," the website for the initiative says. "We are asking for all breweries and brewers far and wide to raise a glass with us in unison and participate in this collaboration."

The campaign was started by Marcus Bakersville, the head brewer of Weathered Souls Brewing, a San Antonio based company. It now has 972 breweries participating in 50 states and 19 countries.

Weathered Souls created a recipe for a stout based called "Black Is Beautiful" for participating breweries to make and sell with their own spin on it.

"Weathered Souls will provide the recipe for the stout base, please place your own spin and love into this. The sky is the limit as far as creativity."

The website for the initiative provides a link to the recipe, as well as a label template and graphics to share on social media.

The campaign is asking participating breweries to:

  • Donate 100% of the beer's proceeds to local foundations that support police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged
  • Choose their own entity to donate to local organizations that support equality and inclusion
  • Commit to the long-term work of equality
