A scooter carrying two people early Sunday morning collided with a car that ran a red light at a St. Petersburg intersection, killing the scooter's 58-year-old driver, police officials said.

Vallis Ann Oswain was operating a 2015 motorized scooter with passenger 30-year-old Daniel Jay Foreman riding on the rear shortly before 2:30 a.m., the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

The scooter was traveling northbound on 8th Street North and approaching the intersection of 5th Avenue North on a green light. About the same time, a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 30-year-old Harshit Srivastava was traveling westbound on 5th Avenue North, approaching a red light at the intersection of 8th Street North.

The Jetta failed to stop at the intersection and entered the path of the scooter, police officials said in a news release. The front of the scooter struck the driver's side of the Jetta, throwing Oswain and Foreman on the road.

Oswain was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, the city's trauma center hospital, where Oswain was pronounced dead. No details were released about Foreman's condition.

Impairment was not a factor in the crash, police said.
