St. Pete woman arrested for driving wrong-way on I-4, drug & alcohol use suspected

A St. Petersburg woman is in Orient Road Jail after she was arrested for driving the wrong way and crashing into a barrier on I-4 on Monday afternoon. 

Brittany Hengel, 38, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-4 at approximately 3:25 p.m. when she crashed into a concrete barrier between 21st Street and 50th Street. 

When police arrived on scene, the 2005 Toyota Camry was disabled on the inside shoulder of I-4 eastbound. Hengler was transported to Tampa General hospital where she was treated for her injuries. She was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol at 11:42 p.m. on Monday night. 

According to the police report, Hengel seemed to be under the influence of medications, drugs and alcohol. Her violations include driving on the wrong side of a divided highway, no proof of insurance, operating a motor vehicle/using a mobile home with an expired registration, operating while driver's license suspended/canceled/revoked, crash - fail to leave information unattended vehicle - property damage. 

Hengel is facing 5 separate charges in the incident:

  • Driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked driver's license
  • Leaving the scene of an accident unattended
  • Resisting an officer without violence
  • Resisting an officer with violence
  • Assault on an emergency medical care provider

Hengel is being held on $3,500 bond.
