Foot traffic took over the northbound lanes of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for the inaugural Skyway 10K Sunday.

More than 7,000 runners were registered for a rare opportunity to run across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

And run they did.

Waves of runners streamed north from the Manatee County side of the bridge toward the finish line on the Pinellas County side of the bridge.

The race was scheduled to kick off at 6:15 a.m. The first runner crossed the finish line about 7 a.m.

Northbound lanes of Sunshine Skyway Bridge was scheduled to be closed from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday. NB vehicle traffic hoping to cross the Skyway Bridge was diverted to Interstate 75 NB.

The Skyway 10K marked the first time the bridge had been closed for a foot race since it opened.

Race proceeds benefit military veterans.
