Skimmers found in 3 bay area gas stations during latest sweep

Sweep reveals skimmers around bay gas stations
Posted

Inspectors focused on gas stations earlier this month in an effort to crack down on gas station skimming machines placed before tourists head to the state for a spring break getaway.

Inspectors from the Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services found three gas stations, two in St. Pete and one in Largo.

Two skimmers were located at the Quick Mart of Largo, located along West Bay Dr.

While one  skimmer was found at One Stop Giant BP and One Food of Pinellas both along 4th St. N in St. Pete.

Inspectors have removed more than 430 skimmers statewide since 2015.

State law now requires gas station operators to take safeguards like placing a seal on their pumps and adding security cameras.

The law also places stricter penalties for people caught placing skimmers.

They say the best ways to avoid your card information from being compromised, pay in cash inside the store, use a credit card instead of a debit card and use a gas pump nearest to the front of the store.
