Police investigate couple's death in St. Pete

St. Petersburg police have been investigating the deaths of two people at a house on 35th Avenue North since early Saturday morning.

Geraldy "Gary" Joseph Stempinski, 69, and his wife,, Marie, 72, were found dead at 700 35th Ave. N. shortly before 9 p.m. Friday, according to a St. Petersburg Police Department news release.

St. Petersburg Police Department Major Crimes Unit detectives were able to establish that there was a murder-suicide that took place inside the Stempinski house. 

Officers were initially called to that location on Friday, April 29, at 8:48 p.m. to conduct a welfare check. Once inside the home, the couple was found dead of gunshot wounds.

The investigation has revealed that Gary had shot and killed his wife while she was inside the home and then took his own life with the same handgun.
