On Tuesday morning, the new "Cross-Bay Ferry" set off on it’s maiden voyage, departing from the Vinoy Basin.

This pilot project will run through April 2017 and was developed to give people a way to cross the Tampa Bay and avoid the bridges that are often congested.

The ferry's first trip was for local leaders and other VIP’s, but starting Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the ferry will be open to the general public.

Round-trip tickets are now for sale and cost $20 per person, with discounts for children under 12.

The weekend schedule will continue throughout the month of November, with free rides being offered the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

The high-speed ferry takes approximately fifty minutes to go between the docks at the Vinoy Basin and the Tampa Convention Center and can hold 149 passengers.

Commuters can start taking advantage of the ferry service starting in December when it opens to the general public during the week.
