Police arrest man for shoving elderly man to the ground at Tampa shopping plaza

TAMPA, Fla. — Ocala Police have arrested a man accused of pushing an 80-year-old to the ground outside of a Tampa shopping center.

The crime happened last week outside of the Fresco y Mas shopping center on Armenia.

Witnesses told ABC Action News a man in a motorized cart was crossing the street, when someone started honking at him.

Witnesses said the driver got out of the car, pushed the man over, and showed what witnesses believed to be some sort of badge.

"He flashed his badge, it said US Bureau. He told the old man, 'do you know who I am and what I can do to you?” said one shopper.

The suspect drove away in a Silver Nissan Rogue and then flashed a gun, according to reports.

Jose Ortiz, 58, from Tampa is now charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery on the elderly.

The US Marshals office told ABC Action News that they believe the man is impersonating a federal agent.

Following his arrest, Ortiz told investigators he did not state that was a law enforcement official during the incident, but did flashed some sort of ID. It was not a badge.

The elderly man was treating for minor injuries.
