This Saturday evening, one event in the Tampa Bay area raises money for several local non-profits.
Heroes of St Pete Police and Fire is one of the organizations receiving the money raised through Tampa Bay's Dancing with the Stars hosted by Hand's Across the Bay.
President of Heroes of St. Pete Police and Fire, Kevin Hannigan, says the purpose of the organization is to honor the fallen officers and support their families financially. The organization also provides the departments with safety equipment. They already built a memorial for the police department and are in the works to build a similar memorial for the fire department.
"It's humbling to be able to reminisce with your co-workers and remember things instead of going to where the actual accident happened ... it's nice to actually go to a memorial and spend some time," said St. Pete Police Officer Aaron Franklin.
Captain Rick Gomolak with St. Pete Fire says he's looking forward to watching the fire department memorial come to life.
"Remembering the fallen, it's an integral part of our department and you never want to forget those people and it just gives us a place for everyone to go back to. The younger people who come on can understand the importance and understand the seriousness of what we do," said Capt. Gomolak of the St. Pete Fire department.
