In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week in which that date falls has been designated as National Police Week. During that week, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world visit Washington, D.C. to participate in the planned events that honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Police Departments and Sheriff's Offices in the Tampa Bay area have taken to social media to remember their fallen and pay tribute to the brave men and women who protect and serve.
