TAMPA, Fla. — Juneteenth is a federal holiday and you might find that some places are closed on Thursday.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 and is a day to commemorate June 19, 1865, the last reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas.
Here is a look at what’s closed nationwide:
- Nonessential federal offices, courthouses
- U.S. post offices
- Most banks
- Stock markets
In the Tampa Bay area, here is a list of closures we are aware of in our area:
- City of Tampa offices. There will be no trash collection on Thursday and it will resume on Friday. Recreation centers closed.
- Hillsborough County will close most government offices, including recreation centers and libraries, except Bruton Memorial Library in Plant City. No trash collection.
- Hillsborough County Tax Collector
- Hillsborough County Courts
- City of St. Petersburg offices, including recreation centers and libraries, are closed.
- Manatee County Clerk of Court
- City of Bartow office. No trash collection on Thursday.
Essential government offices, like the National Weather Service, will remain open. U.S. national parks, parks in Pinellas County, and Hillsborough County will also be open.
Nonessential offices are closed on Thursday, including the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service.
