LIST: Post Offices open late for 2016 Tax Day

Posted

Monday is the tax day for most Americans. Taxpayers have until April 18 this year to file their 2015 tax returns and pay any tax because the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C., fell on Friday, April 15.

The IRS expects 70 percent of taxpayers to receive refunds this year, with an average refund of $2,797.

More than 80 percent of returns are expected to be filed electronically. The IRS anticipates issuing over 90 percent refunds in less than 21 days.

The IRS urges all taxpayers to make sure they have all their year-end statements in hand before they file their return. This includes Forms W-2 from employers, Forms 1099 from banks and other payers, and for those claiming the premium tax credit, Form 1095-A from the Marketplace. Submitting all the correct forms and numbers will help you avoid a delay in receiving your refund and prevent the need to file an amended return later.

Even though most people file their taxes using a computer, many Tampa Bay area Post Offices are staying open late to receive last minute tax returns.

If you are submitting your return by mail, the Post Office urges taxpayers to follow these tips:

  • Be sure to verify Post Office hours of operation.
  • If depositing returns in a collection box on Monday, double-check the pick-up schedule on the box to ensure your return will receive an April 18 postmark.
  • Affix the correct postage. Some returns include many forms and will require additional postage.
  • When possible, use the envelope provided by the IRS and be sure to include a return address.
