A head-on collision on Interstate 75 near Mile Marker 236 in South Hillsborough County was caused by a wrong way driver early Sunday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The traffic crash appeared to be alcohol-related, a highway patrol release said.

A 2000 Nissan SUV was traveling southbound in a northbound lane on I-75 in southern Hillsborough shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. The Nissan collided head-on with a 2007 GMC pickup truck.

The Nissan driver, Gregg Alan Richardson, 57, of Land O Lakes, was seriously injured and taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton for treatment. Juan Luis Garcia, 26, of Palmetto, the driver of the GMC pickup, suffered minor injuries.

Charges are pending, the release said.
