Fire breaks out at same Ybor City building second time in one week

Tampa Fire Rescue is working a three-alarm fire at 1512 E. 8th Ave. in Tampa, where an arson fire occurred one week ago today.

The building is empty but was previously the home of the Ybor Resort and Spa.

Tampa Fire Rescue battled a one-alarm fire at the same location the morning of March 11. Investigators said at the time someone illegally entered the building and set fires at multiple spots in the building.

Assistant Fire Chief Nick LoCicero said the fire was more intense this time.  He said the previous fire damage plus the age of the building made the fire especially difficult to fight.

"It has been remodeled so the construction type is very difficult and the fire gets in between the sub floors and roofs it's very stubborn to put out," said LoCicero.

Danny Alberdi owns the building next to the spa.  He believes there will be damage to his building.

"They said there's going to be water and smoke damage," said Alberdi.

The area around the spa was still closed to traffic as of Saturday afternoon as crews investigate.
