UPDATE | The driver of the vehicle, Kakeem McGhee died from his injuries at the hospital according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Rescuers pulled one person from a vehicle that splashed into a small pond after a traffic crash on U.S Highway 27 early Saturday, authorities said.

Lanes in both directions of U.S. 27 near Lucerne Park Road were shut down for several hours while deputies investigated the incident. The road was reopened by 11:30 a.m.

The crash occurred about 6 a.m. Saturday on southbound U.S. 27, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Two vehicles collided. The impact forced one vehicle to careen across the median through the northbound lanes and into a small pond on the east side of U.S. 27.

Only one person was reported to have unknown serious injuries. That person was pulled from the water and flown to Lakeland Regional Health.
