Citrus deputies use tear gas to help end standoff with armed man in Crystal River

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- Citrus County sheriff's deputies used tear gas to end a nearly 7-hour standoff with an armed man, officials said.

An armed man was threatening to harm himself and refusing to get out of his truck, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies responded to the parking lot of LKQ Corp. off County Road 486 in Crystal River about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office said.

Security guards on duty at LQK told deputies 41-year-old Kevin Cupit of Crystal River became agitated when they asked him why he was parked outside the gates.

State troopers and members of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office SWAT showed up to assist.

Deputies shut down westbound lanes of C.R. 486 at the intersection of he intersection of 491 and eastbound lanes of C.R. 486 at the Pine Ridge entrance were closed.

SWAT members used CS tear gas to force Cupit from the truck. 

Just after 7am, Cupit darted out of his truck to escape the gas and ran from deputies, the release said.

Cupit was subsequently tased and taken into custody without further incident. 

He was taken to a local hospital to undergo a medical evaluation.

When Cupit was in custody, all lanes of 486 were open.
