Allegiant flight 872 from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport bound for Omaha, Neb., was diverted today to Birmingham, Ala., due to an electrical odor in the cabin, an Allegiant official confirmed.

The airliner departed St. Pete-Clearwater International at 8:19 a.m., said a member of Allegiant's On-Call Media Relations Team in an email response.

The flight was diverted to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Birmingham after an odor was detected in the cabin less than an hour later.

An emergency was declared, and the flight landed without incident in Birmingham at 8:51 a.m. EST.

Passengers deplaned at a gate and are waiting for a new flight to arrive, the Allegiant email states. The estimated departure time from Birmingham to Omaha is 2:30 p.m.
