Las Vegas apartments cracking down on 'poop-a-trators'

Several apartment complexes in the Las Vegas area are cracking down on "poop-a-trators"!

You know -- the people who don't pick up after their dog goes to the bathroom.

The Elysian properties in town are five of the complexes getting stricter in order to keep their properties neat and clean.

They are using a service called PooPrints which matches the pet waste to the pet owner if it's left on the apartment's property.

Laura Stevens is a dog owner at Elysian at Stonelake and she loves the service.

"We started getting really sick of there being like 10 piles of fresh poop right outside our door of our old apartment complex," said Stevens.

When you move into the complex with a dog, you will be asked to swab the dog's cheek with one of PooPrints DNA kits.

If your pet's waste is found by management and matches the DNA in the PooPrints lab, you will be fined $250 for the first offense, $350 for the second, and $500 for the third.

"I do think that if you have a pet, it's important to be a responsible pet owner," said Elysian Business Manager Nikki Ganier. "You owe it to the places that you live and your neighbors."

Stevens completely agrees.

"It's nice having it where you're actually held responsible cause I've watched them pick it up here and I know people who have gotten fined for it and it's kinda like...pick up your poop! You won't get fined! We've never gotten fined!"

Ganier says the pet waste they send to the lab matches DNA a little more than half the time.
