Dozens of vehicles, upwards of 40, were involved in a fatal accident on I-96 westbound near Fowlerville, Mich. on Thursday morning.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office says at least three people have died in the accident that occurred around 10 a.m.

They say slick roads and white-out conditions appear to have caused the crash.

Officials have shut down both westbound and eastbound lanes. Westbound I-96 is closed at Fowlerville Road. Eastbound I-96 had been closed at M-52, but has reopened to traffic.

Multiple fire departments responded to help extricate people from their vehicles.
