How to prepare your home to withstand a hurricane

Did you know May 10 is the National Weather Service's 'Strengthen your home' day?

It's a day for homeowners to make sure their homes are prepared to withstand a hurricane and the strong winds that come with it.

According to the National Weather Service, "many of the retrofits (to protect your home) do not cost much or take as long to do as you may think."

Here are the five things you should do to strengthen your home against a hurricane:

  • Trim the trees on your property
  • Shop for approved window coverings
    • Plywood, steel or aluminum panels
  • Collect and secure all loose outdoor items
    • You can tie your items down or bring them indoors
  • Secure all doors
    • Plywood, steel or aluminum panels
  • Move your car to a safe location
    • The garage door is the most vulnerable part of your home if it cannot withstand hurricane winds
