A tow truck driver loading a car was struck and killed on I-75 early Sunday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol says at 3:30 a.m. troopers conducted traffic stops on three vehicles heading southbound on I-75 just south of Big Bend Road. The FHP reports the three vehicles were racing on the interstate.
Troopers say at 4:16 a.m. tow trucks were on scene loading the three vehicles when a Honda Ridgeline pickup truck failed to move over for the patrol cars and tow trucks parked on the outside shoulder of the interstate.
Authorities say the Honda Ridgeline, driven by 44-year-old Gregory Miller of Lakewood Ranch, hit tow truck driver Troy McGuire, who was standing next to the third vehicle stopped for racing. After striking Maguire, the pickup truck crashed into the Sunpoint Towing tow truck.
The 48-year-old McGuire sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Miller was not hurt in the crash.
Troopers arrested Miller for DUI Manslaughter and DUI property damage.
Southbound I-75 was closed for nearly five hours while troopers investigated the crash and cleaned debris from the roadway.
