Bradenton mother facing neglect charges

Posted

A Manatee County woman is facing some serious charges, after police say she abandoned her children and went on a wild ride.

Officers were called to the Social Security office on State Road 64 East Friday afternoon for a report of abandoned children.

Police say 29-year-old Nikia Mills was inside the office when she looked outside and saw someone was trying to repossess her car. That's when police say she got into the vehicle, drove on to sidewalk and through the lawn, nearly hitting the building, before taking off.

Police say Mills' two children, ages four and five, were left alone inside the office.  Mills didn't return for almost an hour.

Mills was arrested and charged with child neglect.  She also faces a federal citation for creating a disturbance on federal property.

Authorities say she has several prior violations with the Division of Children and Families. Her kids are now in state custody as the investigation continues.
