Teachers still needed at several Tampa Bay area school districts

Bus drivers and nurses also needed in schools

TAMPA, Fla. — Teachers, bus drivers and school nurses are still needed at several Tampa Bay area school districts before the start of the 2019-2029 school year.

Hillsborough County has more than 300 instructional openings. This includes classroom teachers, but also speech pathologists, school counselors, reading coaches and more.

Pinellas County Schools has approximately 39 open classroom teacher positions. District leaders are still checking on the number of open nursing and bus driver positions. However, they tell ABC Action News human resources staff is working to ensure they are fully staffed by the start of the school year.

Polk County Schools currently has 123 teacher positions open and 20 to 25 bus driver positions open. The Polk County School Transportation Department has 18 bus driver candidates in training.

Pasco County Schools currently needs 136 teachers and one nurse.

Highlands County Schools still needs to hire 32 teachers for elementary, middle and high school instructional positions, according to the district website.

Hernando County Schools currently needs 26 teachers, according to its employment website.

Manatee County Schools currently has 11 open teacher positions, 15 open bus driver positions and no open nursing positions to fill.

Sarasota County Schools has 46 teacher positions open, but say they continue to recruit, interview and process new teachers. District leaders say the number of vacancies is expected to change between now and school on August 12 and they have no concerns over filling any needed positions. Sarasota County Schools currently need 20 bus drivers.
